Joseph Steensma integrates science, entrepreneurship and community engagement. As a scientist and entrepreneur, Steensma has founded and led several businesses focused on advancing public health. His work aims to commercialize innovative products and services that address pressing public health challenges, bridging the gap between research and real-world application. 

Steensma’s research focuses on the complex interactions between economics, environmental degradation, and health outcomes. He teaches courses in biostatistics, environmental health and the public health implications of climate change. A former president of the Board of Health in Fort Wayne, Ind., Steensma played a pivotal role in implementing one of the earliest and most comprehensive public smoking bans in the country. He has served on numerous nonprofit boards and continues to support research exploring the relationship between human health and the natural environment. 

Passionate about the outdoors, Steensma frequently writes about birds and has authored “A Field Guide to the Birds of North Andros Island,” showcasing his love for nature and commitment to environmental education.
